Goal #4: Theory and Praxis

4.a. Students will describe applications of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies in library and information science.

Annotated Bibliography (LIS 6409- Introduction to Library Administration)– To prepare for my literature review, I created an annotated bibliography of 8 of the sources I had initially collected. Two of these did not make the final cut of sources in the completed literature review. This annotated bibliography demonstrates an evaluation of sources and their methodologies by analyzing each one and what was involved in the studies and interviews. The sources contain both qualitative and quantitative results. You can view the bibliography below.

Needs Assessment (LIS 6511- Collection Development and Maintenance)– This group project was part of a series of broad perspective evaluation exercises required in the field of library science. Our group worked with an existing facility and instead of fabricating most data, we researched their actual statistics where publicly available and used those numbers. Our final presentation was something we were all exceptionally proud of- visually appealing enough to continue interest throughout the 29 pages of content, and packed with valuable information. In this project, both qualitative (focus groups) and quantitative research (circulation statistics, community demographics) methods were employed. Results of both methods were used in the evaluation of needs and action steps to be taken. *The professor from this class asked to use this final draft as an example paper in future classes.*

4.b. Students will identify opportunities for research and develop plans for research in applied settings in library and information science.

Research Proposal (LIS 6271- Research Methods in Library and Information Science) – This assignment felt custom-made for this part of my portfolio. In this group work, we had to identify an opportunity for research and then develop a plan for that research to happen. I came up with the idea of examining the reasons why people don’t make use of their local library because it had come up in a department meeting at my job, so I felt like this was an issue facing many existing libraries. Additionally, on page 13 of this document, you can see my specific contributions to this final paper.
